News Media Canada’s Local Journalism Initiative program renewed for 2024-2025

Earlier this month, we shared our appreciation that the federal government had agreed to renew the Local Journalism Initiative for an additional three years.

Further to this, News Media Canada is pleased to announce the renewal of its Local Journalism Initiative program. The association has received approval from the Department of Canadian Heritage as an Administrator Organization for the 2024-2025 cycle.

News Media Canada is currently working with Canadian Heritage to prepare for the next cycle of LJI project funding. We will be sure to provide an update on specific application dates in the coming weeks.

The renewal process will take time and there may be a gap in funding for publishers with LJI projects that end on March 31, 2024. News Media Canada is mindful of the hardship this would impose and is working to minimize this gap.

In the meantime, some publishers may choose to keep their LJI reporter and continue to produce and share the content described in their current funding agreement. Should their project be renewed, they will be able to use the new funds towards their LJI reporter’s salary starting from April 1, 2024.

Please be advised, however, that just because a project received funding in a previous cycle, it does not guarantee it will be renewed. News Media Canada’s LJI program uses a competitive application process, and several factors are considered when determining the approval of any project.

Ultimately, the decision on appropriate next steps remains with individual publishers, who have a keen awareness of the health and bandwidth of their respective organizations. We look forward to sharing more information on funding applications as soon as they are available.

Longtime B.C. community news editor announces his retirement

After more than 40 years in the news business, Don Bodger, who most recently served as the editor for the Black Press-owned Chemainus Valley Courier has announced his retirement.

In a column under the headline ‘A fond farewell’ that he has worked on his final issue as editor of the Courier. He retired on March 15.

His column describes his deep and lasting connection to the local community.

He writes: “As I close out my tenure, everyone who knows me is aware of my love of music and music trivia. I can’t end without some kind of song title reference as a final quote. This is not goodbye for good because as the 1970s group The Spinners declared: ‘I’ll Be Around.’

It just won’t be in the same capacity that so many are used to seeing me with a camera dangling around my neck and a notebook in my hand.”

We wish Don all the best on this next chapter in his life.

Four in five Canadians read newspaper content each week: research

Despite the digital shift in media consumption, Canadian adults continue to engage with newspaper content, whether in print or digital format, on a weekly basis.

Research conducted at the end of 2023 finds that 81% of Canadians report reading a newspaper on one of four platforms over the course of a week. Nearly a quarter of the population (22%) use all four print and digital platforms to access news and stay informed, highlighting the integration of traditional and digital news consumption habits.

Newspapers continue to adapt and cater to the varied reader preferences in today’s digital age by providing content on various platforms. Newspaper access on smartphones has become the number one platform at all times of day, appealing to Canadians’ desire to stay informed on the go, 24/7. However, readers are choosing any number of platforms to read newspaper content – it is no longer about just a single way to reach readers.

Totum Research managed the research on behalf of News Media Canada. Online interviews were conducted with 2621 Canadian adults in November 2023.
