Canada Post receives approval for 2002 rate increases

Canada Post has received Governor-in-Council approval for proposed increases in International and USA postal rates and in regulated Domestic Lettermail rates, effective Jan. 14, 2002.

Letters, cards and postcards up to 30 grams, destined for the USA, will increase by 5 cents to $0.65. There will be a 20-cent increase to $1.25 for letters, cards and postcards to other foreign destinations. The base weight for the International basic letter rate will increase from 20 grams to 30 grams.

The domestic basic letter rate will increase in January, 2002 by one cent to 48 cents in compliance with the price-cap formula approved by the federal government in 1998. Under the price-cap formula, domestic basic letter rate increases, cannot not exceed 66.67 per cent of inflation as measured by the Consumer Price Index.

Rate increases in the range of two to three per cent for other domestic regulated lettermail have also been approved. All of the new rates are effective Jan. 14, 2002 and stamps with the new denominations will be available for sale in Canada Post outlets beginning Jan. 2.
