Northern Light bought by Brunswick News

Your community newspaper (Bathurst (NB) Northern Light) is now under the ownership of a New Brunswick company.

The sale of the Northern Light to Brunswick News Inc., a division of J.D. Irving Ltd., by Quebec-based Transcontinental Media Inc. was completed on Monday (July 28).  Victor Mlodecki, a spokesman for Brunswick News Inc., said the Northern Light will be part of a strategic marketing group in New Brunswick.

ÔÇ£It fits us very well,ÔÇØ he said during a visit to the newspaper offices on Tuesday to meet with staff. ÔÇ£This is a very strong, good weekly newspaper. We donÔÇÖt anticipate making any substantial changes; we intend to operate it.ÔÇØ

Mlodecki acknowledged that the Northern Light has been bought and sold a number of times since 1994, but pointed out Brunswick News Inc. is not in the business of selling newspapers. In addition to dailies like the Telegraph Journal and The Times Transcript, the company owns such weeklies as Miramichi (NB) Leader and Sussex (NB) Kings County Record

Last August, this newspaper was acquired by Transcontinental from CanWest Global Communications Corp.

Former Northern Light publisher Paul Ramsay has stayed with Transcontinental and is now working for that company at newspapers in Sackville and Amherst. A news publisher for here has not yet been hired.
