Quill Recognition Awards

News Media Canada recognizes individuals for their long-standing distinguished service to the news media industry, as well as those who have made a substantial contribution to the association.

Any individual who owns or is employed by a News Media Canada-member company or media title is eligible to receive a Quill Award, subject to the criteria specified below. Click on the appropriate tab for the nomination process and details about each award.

Quill Recognition Awards

Nominations must be made by a News Media Canada member. Allow four to six weeks for consideration of nominations and production of the awards.

For Diamond, Gold and Silver Quills, submit a completed nomination form, along with the nominee’s biography, resume or other supporting documentation, to the News Media Canada national office.

For Bronze Quills, submit a completed nomination form to the News Media Canada national office. Bronze Quills do not require board approval.

The Diamond Quill Award recognizes distinguished service of 75 years or more. It is presented with the approval of the News Media Canada board of directors to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry, regardless of position or title, for a minimum 75 years. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry with distinction.

The Gold Quill Award recognizes distinguished service of 50 years or more. It is presented with the approval of the News Media Canada board of directors to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry, regardless of position or title, for a minimum of 50 years. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry with distinction.

The Silver Quill Award recognizes distinguished service of 25 years or more. It is presented with the approval of the News Media Canada board of directors to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry, regardless of position or title, for a minimum of 25 years. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry with distinction.

Publishers of member news media may recognize long-standing distinguished service of staff members who do not qualify for Diamond, Gold or Silver Quills by presenting them with a Bronze Quill.

The President’s Gold Quill is presented to the outgoing Association President at the completion of his or her term in recognition of their commitment to the news media industry and their dedicated service as president of the association. The presentation is made at the News Media Canada annual meeting or other similar event.

Similarly the President’s Quill is presented to outgoing News Media Canada directors who have served a minimum of two years’ service on the News Media Canada board. The presentation is made at the News Media Canada annual meeting or other similar event.
