John Cruickshank to step down as Toronto Star publisher

John Cruickshank is stepping down from his role as publisher of the Toronto Star and president of Star Media Group. Cruickshank has served as publisher at the Star since early 2009. He previously served as Publisher of CBC News, Publisher of the Chicago Sun-Times, Editor-in-Chief of the Vancouver Sun and Managing Editor of The Globe and Mail. He also worked for the Montreal Gazette and started his journalism career with the Kingston Whig Standard.

Cruickshank’s final day at the newspaper be May 4. His responsibilities will be handled by David Holland, president and CEO of Torstar Corporation on an interim basis.

“John’s leadership and strategic thinking in all aspects of the business have had a significant positive impact on Torstar,” Holland said. “Again and again, he made the tough and innovative decisions necessary to move the Toronto Star forward in these challenging times.”
