John Fraser and Andy Donato named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame

National NewsMedia Council president and CEO John Fraser and award-winning editorial cartoonist Andy Donato have been named to the Canadian News Hall of Fame for 2016.

Over the course of his 50-year career, John Fraser has served in numerous newsroom roles at The Globe and Mail, both at home and abroad, as editor of Saturday Night magazine, and has written columns for the Toronto Star, National Post, The Globe and Mail and Maclean’s. He has earned three National Newspaper Awards and 11 National Magazine Awards and was appointed a Member of the Order of Canada in 2002. Fraser is currently serving as the inaugural president and CEO for the National NewsMedia Council in Toronto.

Andy Donato has been working as an editorial cartoonist for decades, beginning as a freelance artist at the Toronto Telegram in 1956. In 1971, he joined the Toronto Sun and went on to become the paper’s full time editorial cartoonist and art director. He received the 1976 National Newspaper Award for editorial cartooning and has served as president for the Association of American Editorial Cartoonists and president of the Association of Canadian Cartoonists.

Founded by the Toronto Press Club in 1965, the Canadian News Hall of Fame is a national program that honours individuals who have made a significant contribution to journalism in Canada. More than 100 men and women have been inducted to date.

Fraser and Donato will be honoured at a gala banquet in Toronto in late November.
