Montreal Gazette names Bert Archer as new editor-in-chief

The Montreal Gazette has announced that Bert Archer has been named the publication’s new editor-in-chief. He will begin his role on May 16.

Archer is a native Montrealer who went on to a career as a journalist, author, editor and literary critic. He replaces Lucinda Chodan, who announced in February she was stepping down after nine years in the role, and after a 40-year career in journalism.

“It’s a homecoming. I was born here, raised here, it’s where half my family lives, a dozen cousins, children of my mother’s 14 sisters and brothers,” Archer, 54, wrote in a note to staff at the Gazette.

“And to come back this way, to lead the paper my parents subscribed to, the paper I learned to read papers from, and work with the most experienced staff in all of anglo-Canadian journalism? C’est pas pire, ça.”
