Ottawa to consider having Canada Post distribute Quebec’s local weeklies

A story published by CBC and La Presse Canadienne reports the federal government is looking at ways Canada Post could take over the distribution of Quebec’s regional and local newspapers.

Earlier this week, Montreal’s Mayor, Valérie Plante announced that Publisacs, essentially plastic bags containing flyers, coupons, and local newspapers, will only be delivered to households that request them.

Currently, residents have the option to refuse Publisacs.

As per the report, Plante said the city will establish a financial assistance program to support local newspapers during the transition period.
