Newspapers 24/7 Archive

Since 2012, Newspapers Canada, and now News Media Canada, has tracked readership by device and time of day to measure print’s impressive stability over time and the continued growth of digital readership. This study was then repeated in 2013, 2014, 2016, 2017, 2018, 2019 and 2022 to evaluate how readership habits have changed over time. Here you can access the archive of materials from past years’ studies, where you will see that:

  • Total readership is strong and stable. Every device (print, web, phone and tablet) continues to be used by every demographic to access the newspaper.
  • Newspaper readership continues across all devices demonstrating Canadians’ interest in news and continued trust in newspapers brands to deliver this.
  • Print readership continues to be strong. In terms of time of day, morning is the key period and there is peak in the evening too.
  • Tablet maintains its evening usage (but it is not alone).
  • More Canadians are reading newspapers digitally – in addition to but not replacing print.
  • Web and phone readership have three peaks: first thing in the morning, mid-morning and evening.
