Canadian newspapers shine at the INMA Global Media Awards

A number of Canadian newspapers were among the winning news organizations at this year’s INMA Global Media Awards. The international competition handed out 40 first-place prizes to news publications from around the world in recognition of innovative audience, brand and revenue building initiatives across all platforms.

The Globe and Mail was announced as the regional winner for North America for its Federal Leaders Debate on the Economy, which also took home the top prize in the Best Use of an Event to Build a News Brand category.

The Winnipeg Free Press earned first place for Best Use of Data Analytics while the new WinnipegFreePress.com website was recognized by INMA as the second place winner for Best New Paid Content Initiative. The Manitoba daily also took home a third place prize in the Best Idea to Grow Digital Readership or Engagement category for its revamped email marketing campaign, which includes a daily Head Start email that offers a morning briefing on the day’s top headlines.

The Montreal Gazette earned first place for Best Native Advertising category for its Rethinking Montreal campaign, a five-part digital series developed in partnership with Concordia University about the future of Montreal (Je Vois Montréal) debate. Postmedia papers (Vancouver Sun, Calgary Herald, Ottawa Citizen, Montreal Gazette and National Post) earned second place in the same category for the Behind the Moment campaign for Aeroplan.

Toronto Star was awarded first place in the Best Ideas or Innovation to Create New Profit Centres category for its “Your Money Matters” financial literacy program for teens. The daily paper’s Star Touch mobile app took home second place in the Best Use of Mobile category, with the app’s launch earning second place in the Best New Corporate Innovative category and a third-place nod in the Best Product Launch category.

Edmonton Journal’s fashion-oriented “Everywear” social media campaign, a partnership with the West Edmonton Mall, earned second place in the Best Idea or Innovation to Create New Profit Centers category.

Finally, Calgary Herald and the Edmonton Journal were awarded first place in the Best New Concept to Incubate Products or Ideas category for their Capital Ideas program, which has helped foster a community of local business owners with live events and networking opportunities.
