Former CCNA director Neil Thom passes away

Neil Thom, former director of the Canadian Community Newspapers Association and past president of the Saskatchewan Weekly Newspapers Association, has died. He was 56 years old.

Neil passed away on December 23 in Saskatoon after a long and courageous struggle with cancer.

Neil was most recently the publisher of Yorkton This Week and was a strong believer in community newspapers. He represented the industry with energy and passion. Neil was the consummate newspaperman and an excellent ambassador for the industry.

Neil was appointed to the CCNA board of directors in July, 2002, and served on several committees during his 13-year tenure. From 2010 to 2015, Neil was a member of the CCNA executive committee, serving initially as corporate secretary, then second vice-president, and later first vice-president. In September, 2007, Neil received the Silver Quill award in recognition of 25 years of distinguished service to the newspaper industry.

A funeral service will be held at 2:00 PM on Friday, January 4, 2019, at St. Andrew’s United Church, 29 Smith Street East, Yorkton, SK. Donations may be made to Yorkton SIGN as gifts of remembrance.
