Are you ready for National Newspaper Week 2019?

National Newspaper Week starts this Sunday, October 6

In a few short days, we start celebrations for National Newspaper Week 2019. News Media Canada is coordinating a national ad campaign to remind Canadians of the important role that newspapers play in our lives.

There is still time to participate in this annual event. View the 2019 Publisher’s Toolkit for a variety of ad and editorial resources, or read on for ideas to bring it to life in your own local market.

National Ad Campaign

Print Ads:

More than 350 newspapers across the country will be running one of our impactful ads next week. Don’t worry; it’s not too late. If you are not already booked to run one of these great ads, you can still download material from our site. Click here and choose one of the three ads in various ad sizes or the working files (InDesign). Pick your favourite and celebrate in the pages of your paper next week. Remember to replace the News Media Canada logo with your own.

Digital Ads:

Digital ads in leaderboard and big box formats are also available. Click here to select and download an ad. Link the ad to www.newspapersmatter.ca.

Editorials

Be sure to tell your readers about National Newspaper Week. Remind them of the critical role that newspapers play in our democracy and in providing us with trusted, credible information. The message from last year remains the same … Newspapers Matter.  Now More Than Ever. Write your own, or view a number of pre-written editorial pieces from last year’s campaign for inspiration. Click here to access them.

Editorial Cartoon

We have an editorial cartoon commissioned specifically for National Newspaper Week.  Nationally syndicated editorial cartoonist Patrick LaMontagne has created an exclusive cartoon highlighting truth in journalism (view a lo-res image online by clicking here). His current clients can choose to use this cartoon during the week of October 6-12, and he will also offer community newspapers special pricing for one-time use.  Contact Patrick directly at cartoon@cartoonink.com to obtain high-resolution artwork for publishing.

Social Media “Influencer” Campaign – National and Local

News Media Canada is supporting the newspaper campaign with a social media influencer campaign.  We have reached out to notable Canadians to ask them to recognize National Newspaper Week by posting a photo of themselves with their favourite newspaper on their social media channels.

You can do the same locally by asking your readers and high profile local residents to participate on social media.  Click here for sample email copy.  Engage your readers with contests and social media features.  You can also follow News Media Canada on Facebook, Instagram and Twitter to keep up with posts from accounts across the country.

Carrier Appreciation Day – Saturday, October 12

If your newspaper relies on carrier delivery, consider running a carrier appreciation ad to recognize your loyal carrier force on International Carrier Appreciation Day, Saturday, October 12. Two different ads in various print sizes and digital formats are available to download by clicking here.

If you have any questions about the resources available for National Newspaper Week, please contact Kelly Levson, Director of Marketing and Research, at klevson@newsmediacanada.ca.
