Linage

Linage is the conventional method to measure print advertising within a newspaper and is defined as the number of lines of text in a column. As advertisements are a key revenue source for newspapers, tracking changes in linage year-over-year provides insights into the status of the newspaper industry.

Up until the end of December 2016, newspapers from across Canada provided confidential information on their advertising volumes into Newspapers Canada’s Linage system.

Data collection for the daily newspaper linage program was discontinued beginning in 2017.

ROP and Flyer/Insert linage data up until December 2016 has been verified and retained in the online system for access and ongoing analysis by all authorized users.
