Newspaper journalism—both local and national—is critically important, especially in the reality in which we live.
National Newspaper Week (NNW) is designed to recognize the role that newspapers and their sites play in providing Canadians with credible, factual news and spotlight why news media continues to be a trusted source of information that is critical to our democracy.
In fact, nine in 10 Canadians (88%) read newspapers each week across Canada – either in print or digital format. National Newspaper Week is also a chance to reflect on the essential service newspapers provide with diverse, local, original content that cannot be found anywhere else. The theme of this year’s campaign is “Canada’s News Media. Champion the Truth”.
Newspaper publishers across Canada will be celebrating National Newspaper Week with a print and digital advertising campaign, special features, local events and more. News Media Canada, the association that represents the Canadian news media industry, has partnered with headline-grabbing Canadian designer, Hayley Elsaesser, to create a unique celebration opportunity this year.
Champion the Truth Capsule Collection
To celebrate this year’s National Newspaper Week and give Canadians the chance to wear their support on their sleeve, News Media Canada has partnered with iconic Canadian fashion designer Hayley Elsaesser to launch a limited-edition capsule collection.
The Champion the Truth capsule collection is a celebration and recognition of the essential service newspapers provide by delivering credible, diverse, local and original journalism in Canada.
The collection is inspired by Hayley’s Opa (grandfather) who was the proud owner and publisher of a local newspaper in British Columbia. Each item is emblazoned with the words “news” and “truth” in various languages spoken across Canada, and features her iconic mouthy print design. The overall collection highlights the strength of Canada’s diversity, and reflects on the important role newspapers play in providing credible, factual reporting and a voice for local communities across the country, keeping them connected to what matters most.
To support Canadian journalism, all proceeds from the sales of the Champion the Truth capsule collection will be donated to Canadian Journalists for Free Expression (CJFE). Learn more about CJFE at cjfe.org.
