Announcing the winners of the 2013 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards

Newspapers Canada is pleased to announce the winners of the 2013 Canadian Community Newspaper Awards. The annual awards program features 33 unique categories honouring outstanding editorial, photography, multimedia and overall excellence in community newspaper publishing. The 2013 competition saw over 250  publications from coast-to-coast submit 2,222 entries representing their best work from 2012. This year’s new category for News Feature Photography received 110 entries.

Highlights:

  • The Yukon News in Whitehorse, YT received seven first place awards within its circulation class at this year’s competition: Best Multimedia Feature, Best News Feature Photo, Outstanding Reporter Initiative, Best Photo Essay, Best News Story, Best Business Writing and columnist Al Pope was awarded the George Cadogan Memorial Outstanding Columnist Award.
  • The Chief in Squamish, B.C. received a total of seven first place awards: Best All-Around Newspaper, Best Front Page, Best Editorial Page, Best Feature Writing for Rebecca Aldous, Best Sports Photo for Ben Lypka and Best Website.
  • Huntsville Forester in Ontario received four first place accolades for Best All-Round Newspaper, Best Editorial Page, Best Front Page and Best Feature Story.
  • Best All-Round Newspaper, Best Front Page and Best Environmental Writing went to Gulf Islands Driftwood in Salt Spring Island, BC.
  • The Herald in Whitewood Saskatchewan took home top prizes for Best Front Page and Best All-Round Newspaper.
  • Aylmer Express and The Vancouver Courier took home first place prizes for Outstanding Community Service. Writers from The Courier also received top awards for Best Agricultural Story and Best Feature Series.
  • Ubyssey from the University of British Columbia swept the Campus Newspaper division taking home first place awards in all four categories.
  • Journal Adsum, at CFB Valcartier in Quebec was named this year’s Best Canadian Forces Base Newspaper.

This year’s first-place winners will be recognized at a special event on Thursday, May 2 during the INK+BEYOND newspaper conference in Ottawa. This evening function is included in the price of full-conference admission. Day passes and guest tickets are also available.
