The Globe and Mail, Edmonton Journal and Toronto Star are among the finalists at this year’s Online Journalism Awards. Launched in 2000, the annual awards are hosted by the Online News Association (ONA) to recognize excellence in digital journalism on an international scale.

The Globe and Mail has been nominated in the Explanatory Reporting (medium) category for Rethinking Immigration, part of the paper’s Our Time to Lead series. The Globe is also a finalist in the Feature (medium) category for Breaking Caste, a multimedia initiative which offers an inside look at an all-girls school in India.

Edmonton Journal has been nominated in the Breaking News (medium) category for its extensive coverage of the Univerisity of Alberta shooting in June 2012.

Finally, Toronto Star has been nominated in the Explanatory Reporting (large) category for Somalia: Where Famine Is a Crime, which highlights the devastating impact of hunger in the region through editorial, video and photography.

The final winners of the 2012 Online Journalism Awards will be announced at the upcoming ONA Conference on September 22, in San Francisco.
