Community newspapers are the original social media

Community newspaper readers across Canada have always looked in their printed papers to find out about births and deaths, local opinions, who is retiring, what the local sports teams are doing, who is graduating and more.

Research continues to show that Canadians are reading their community newspapers. The latest Vividata survey finds eight out of ten adults consider themselves to be community newspaper readers, regardless of frequency of publication. And the latest research from Newspapers Canada explores engagement with the printed community newspaper.

Some of those findings can be found in the Five Things You Thought You Knew About Community Newspapers presentation from the 2016 National Conference that was held in Edmonton last month.
