Ready? Set? Apply!

The Local Journalism Initiative application form and guidelines are finally here.

Launched earlier this year by the Government of Canada, the Local Journalism Initiative supports the creation of original civic journalism that is relevant to the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada, broadening availability and consumption of local and regional news on matters of civic governance.

The Initiative will provide funding for English, French and Indigenous newspapers and news media to hire reporters to cover civic institutions and issues in underserved communities.

We encourage you to identify a need for civic journalism in an underserved community and have a clear idea of how and why you want to fill it.  Find more on identifying a need here.

Applications will be evaluated by a judging panel, composed of independent experts from across the news media industry. The panel will review applications, select recipients, and decide funding allocations.

The deadline to submit your application is November 15, 2019.  Applications will be accepted via courier or email. Please note that an application with a date stamp after the application deadline will not be accepted. When an application deadline falls on a weekend or statutory holiday, it is extended to the following working day. An acknowledgement will be sent within two (2) weeks of receiving your application in our office.
