Herman creator dies at 75

Cartoonist Jim Unger, best known for his Herman comic strip which appeared in newspapers across the country, has died at his home in Saanich, BC at the age of 75. Born in London, England, Unger immigrated in 1968 to Canada, where his cartooning career began at the Mississauga Times in Mississauga, ON.

His cartoon creation Herman was first syndicated in 1974, and was eventually picked up by newspapers around the globe. He twice won the National Cartoonist Society’s award for best syndicated panel.

According to colleague Adrian Raeside, cartoonist at the Times Colonist, Unger is remembered for his big heart, sharp wit and an ability to find humour and absurdity in almost anything.
