The U.K.’s Cairncross Review serves as a reminder for federal government to act

Last month, the final report of the Cairncross Review, an independent review into the state of the U.K. press, was released. It’s recommendations to cast a positive future for quality journalism in the U.K. were sweeping. Among its calls were better regulation of tech giants, changes to digital advertising, and enhanced efforts at media literacy.

News Media Canada is mindful of how many of the recommendations presented in the Cairncross Review could be appropriately applied to the Canadian media landscape. As we approach next week’s federal budget, we call on the federal government to keep true to its policy promises and support quality journalism in Canada.
