Two of Canada’s daily newspapers are on the shortlist for this year’s Canadian Journalism Foundation (CJF) Jackman Award. The annual award recognizes Canadian news organizations that embody exemplary journalism with a resulting impact on the communities they serve.
Among this year’s finalists are: The Globe and Mail, which is nominated for The Unremembered, an investigation that revealed at least 54 soldiers and veterans killed themselves after returning from fighting in Afghanistan; and the Toronto Star, which is nominated for its investigative coverage of the controversial Motherisk lab program at The Hospital for Sick Children in Toronto.
The Globe and Mail is also on the short list for this year’s CJF Innovation Award. The award celebrates creative new measures that advance the quality of journalism in Canada. The Globe was praised for its digital storytelling tools, including an enriched article tool for creating immersive multimedia features, and a customized tool for generating instant interactive charts from any spreadsheet.
The winners of the Jackman Award for Excellence and the CJF Innovation Award will be announced at the annual CJF Awards at The Fairmont Royal York on June 16 in Toronto.
