Associated Press Media Editors is bringing its renowned NewsTrain workshop to Halifax, Nova Scotia, May 6-7, 2016. Registration for this affordable, high-quality workshop will be $75 U.S. and includes two full days of training and meals.
The Halifax NewsTrain will be held at the University of King's College, in conjunction with the Atlantic Journalism Awards Gala, which takes place at the Halifax Marriott Harbourfront Hotel on May 7. NewsTrain is open to all journalists including reporters and editors from all media, freelancers, students, and journalism educators.
The Halifax NewsTrain is hosted, planned and supported by Newspapers Canada and a committee of local journalism organizations. The program agenda has been designed to meet the needs of local journalists. Sessions include:
- maximizing your social media for personal branding and audience engagement,
- using social media for sourcing, including verifying user-generated content,
- making smart choices in digital storytelling,
- planning for breaking news on multiple platforms,
- writing for mobile,
- using audience analytics to get your stories read, and
- shooting compelling news video and photos with your smartphone.
Your accomplished instructors for the workshop at the University of King’s College include:
- Matt Frehner, senior editor for mobile and interactive news at The Globe and Mail.
- Kathy Kieliszewski, visuals director for the Detroit Free Press and four-time Emmy Award winner.
- Daniel Victor, senior staff editor for The New York Times and a former social media editor at the Times and ProPublica.org.

Diversity Scholarships: A limited number of competitive diversity scholarships to cover the $75 registration fee are available to professional journalists, journalism educators and journalism students from diverse backgrounds. Travel expenses must be covered by the applicant or his/her organization.
