The Globe and Mail leads the pack among the 26 news organizations nominated for the 64th annual National Newspaper Awards. La Presse in Montreal received 12 nominations, Toronto Star received nine and The Canadian Press finished with five. The Edmonton Journal, The Vancouver Sun and Winnipeg Free Press each collected three nominations while The Hamilton Spectator, National Post and Postmedia News have two.
The National Newspaper Awards were founded by the Toronto Press Club and have honoured excellence in daily newspaper publishing in Canada since 1949. Among the 1,430 entries submitted for the 2012 competition, there are a total of 72 finalists in 22 different categories. This was the first year that the annual competition was opened up to online news sources.

The winners of the 2012 National Newspaper Awards will be honoured during a special awards gala in Ottawa on May 3 held in conjunction with the INK+BEYOND newspaper conference.
