Quill Recognition AwardsNews Media Canada recognizes individuals for their long-standing service to the newspaper industry, as well as those who have made a distinguished contribution to the association. See below for details about each award and the nomination process.

Nominations for Diamond, Gold and Silver Quills must be submitted to an affiliated regional association for review prior to being forwarded to the News Media Canada board of directors for consideration. Diamond, Gold and Silver Quills are presented at regional conventions or the News Media Canada annual meeting.

Nominations for Bronze Quills may be submitted directly to the News Media Canada office and do not require the approval of the News Media Canada board of directors. Nomination forms may be obtained from the News Media Canada office or downloaded from this page. Bronze Quills are presented at functions of the publisher's choosing.

The Diamond Quill recognizes service of 75 years or more. It is presented to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry or an individual who in the view of the nominating regional affiliated association has a made a substantial contribution to the news media industry. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry regardless of position or title for a minimum of 75 years.

The Gold Quill recognizes service of 50 to 74 years. It is presented to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry or an individual who in the view of the nominating regional affiliated association has a made a substantial contribution to the news media industry. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry regardless of position or title for a minimum of 50 years.

The Silver Quill recognizes service of 25 to 49 years. It is presented to any individual who has been actively engaged in the news media industry, or an individual who in the view of the nominating regional affiliated association has made a substantial contribution to the news media industry. The purpose of this honour is to pay tribute to those who have served Canada’s news media industry regardless of position or title for a minimum of 25 years.

Publishers of member newspapers may recognize long-standing and distinguished service of staff members who do not qualify for Gold or Silver Quills by presenting them with a Bronze Quill. Bronze Quill certificates may be requested directly from News Media Canada and do not require board approval.

The President's Gold Quill is presented to the outgoing Association President at the completion of his or her term in recognition of their commitment to the news media industry and their dedicated service as president of the association. The presentation is made at the News Media Canada annual meeting or other similar event.

Similarly the President's Quill is presented to outgoing News Media Canada directors who have served a minimum of two years' service on the News Media Canada board. The presentation is made at the News Media Canada annual meeting or other similar event.
