Changes to CNA and CCNA boards of directors

CNA Board Changes

Bob Cox, Publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press, has been named the new chair of the Canadian Newspaper Association (CNA). Cox oversees the publication of the Winnipeg Free Press and other FP Newspapers, including Brandon Sun, Steinbach Carillon and Canstar community newspapers in Winnipeg. Outgoing chair, Glacier Media Group’s Peter Kvarnstrom, remains as a director.

In addition, there have been a number of recent changes and additions to the CNA Board.

Former CNA Chair, Alan Allnutt, Postmedia Network, has left the board following his retirement from the industry.

Postmedia’s Craig Barnard has moved to Vice-Chair and Neil Oliver of Metroland was appointed as the new treasurer.

Joining the board are Wendy Desmarteaux, Senior Vice-President Digital Operations and Transformation at Postmedia and Siobhan Vinish, Senior Vice President, Marketing & Audience Development at Postmedia.

CCNA Board Changes

During elections held on May 28, 2014, the Canadian Community Newspapers Association (CCNA) board elected Abbas Homayed as the association’s 94th president. Homayed, publisher of Northern Life in Sudbury since 1996 and served as treasurer and member of the co-management committee. He previously served as president of the Ontario Community Newspapers Association.

In addition, there have been a number of recent changes and additions to the CCNA Board.

Outgoing president Greg Nesbitt assumed the role of chairman of the board and immediate past president. As such, past president Paul MacNeill relinquished the role of chairman of the board.

Also elected were Neil Thom of Yorkton This Week, SK, as first vice-president and Sophie Gaulin of La Liberté, MB, as corporate secretary. Roger Holmes of Star News Inc., AB, was was appointed to a second term as treasurer.

CCNA’s regional affiliates also made a number of new appointments to the CCNA board:

The Manitoba Community Newspapers Association (MCNA) named Kim Macaulay of The Clipper Weekly as its representative, replacing Greg Nesbitt.

The Ontario Community Newspapers Association (OCNA) appointed Gordon Cameron of Hamilton Community News as its newest representative, replacing retiring director Rick Shaver.
