A new report from Axios published earlier this week reveals that hundreds of newspapers across the United States have been filing antitrust lawsuits against Google and Facebook, alleging the firms monopolized the digital ad market that sucked revenue from local news outlets.
The News Media Alliance, a trade group that represents newspapers, has not been involved in the litigation, but has been monitoring the lawsuits.
“We fully support this litigation,” News Media Alliance general counsel Danielle Coffey is quoted as saying in the story.
It is hoped the litigation will help newspapers “recover past damages” caused by tech companies. It is also hoped that the proceedings will help “to establish a new system going forward in which newspapers aren’t just competitive again, but can thrive”.
