A Senate committee set to study the state of CanadaÔÇÖs media will begin public hearings this fall and hope to publish their findings shortly after.
The six-person committee is led by Senator Joan Fraiser, chair of the Senate Transport and Communications Committee and also a former editor.
The study would be the third such study into the state of CanadaÔÇÖs media by Parliament in the past 10 years. Former Senator Keith Davey held a study in 1970 and Tom Kent held one in 1981. Not much came of either study, with the Kent CommissionÔÇÖs main recommendation calling for a Canada Newspaper Act left untouched.
The committee is said to have a broad mandate, including examining media ownership.
