Canadians led the way as award recipients at the Suburban Newspapers of America fall publishers’ conference in Philadelphia. Editor of the Year awards were presented to Lynn Haddrall, editor in chief of The Record (Waterloo Region), a daily paper that is part of the Metroland Media Group. Winning the award on the community newspaper side was Christopher Bryan, editor with the Burnaby NewsLeader and New Westminster NewsLeader (Black Press). The awards were announced earlier this year.
The SNA Editor of the Year award recognizes an editor who has made outstanding contributions to his or her publishing company through strong management skills, readership initiatives, community involvement, innovation and a commitment to quality journalism.
"It's wonderful to be recognized for doing something that you love,” said Haddrall. “I get to work with a great team of journalists every day. I certainly share this with them because The Record was also chosen by SNA as Newspaper of the Year for 2009. I'm incredibly proud of our journalists and thrilled that SNA has chosen to celebrate our daily commitment to editorial excellence."
Metroland Media Group Ltd. earned the most winning entries (93) from competing companies followed by the Journal Register Company with 71 and Black Press with 55. Among the individual newspapers, the St Albert Gazette (Great West Newspapers Limited Partnership) led with nine awards.
