The Oregonian newspaper in Portland, Oregon is the first North American newspaper to begin using watermarking technology in its print edition. Similar to Quick Response (QR) codes, the imperceptible digital watermarks are embedded into printed images which readers can scan with a smartphone camera to unlock story-related content, videos and photo galleries.
Peter Bhatia, president of The Oregonian, told News & Tech magazine, "It’s a wonderful technology for giving readers the opportunity to go deeper into the content we provide them."
