The deadline for the 2012 Michener Awards, which honours excellence in Canadian public service journalism, is this Friday, February 24, 2012.
Daily and community newspapers and their staff can submit entries, which should highlight how the newspaper improved public policy, ethical standards, corporate governance or the lives of Canadians.
In addition, in 2011 the Michener Foundation announced that it would offer two fellowships in 2012; one that would provide funding for an investigative journalism project, and a second for journalism education.
The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism will be awarded to a mature journalist to complete a reporting project in the field of public policy, while the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education will fund a journalist-in-residence for one semester at a Canadian university or college.
