Sun Media will launch a metered paywall system for its daily papers in Ottawa, Toronto, Winnipeg, Calgary and Edmonton on December 4. Breaking news and blog content will remain free of charge but access to premium articles—including investigative reports, featured columnists, photo and video libraries—will be restricted. Website visitors will be able to view 20 premium articles per month before being asked to register for the “Sun+” service.
Mobile apps will continue to be free, but will only contain condensed editorial content.
Earlier this year, Sun Media activated paywalls at Journal de Montreal and Journal de Quebec. The company is also planning on to create bundles to allow Sun+ subscribers to content from papers in different regions across the Sun Media chain.
