Newspaper leaders take their message to Parliament

Last week, several industry leaders appeared before the House of Commons Standing Committee on Canadian Heritage for their ongoing study of ‘Media and Local Communities‘.

Testifying before the committee were John Honderich, chair of Torstar Corporation; Martin Cauchon, executive chairman, Groupe Capitales Médias; Brian Myles, editor, Le Devoir; Pierre-Paul Noreau, president and publisher, Le Droit; as well as James Baxter, founding editor of iPolitics.

The key theme of their testimony addressed how newspapers can compete in an economic environment where significant advertising revenue has been lost to the Internet, and the impact that has on public interest journalism.

To read more about the testimony and comments from the committee meeting, the Hamilton Spectator has an excellent story on their website. You can read it here.
