Two Alberta daily newspapers are among the international finalists at the 2014 Online Journalism Awards. The annual awards, handed out by the U.S.-based Online News Association, celebrate excellence in digital journalism in several areas, including investigations, data reporting, innovation and visuals.
The Calgary Herald has been selected as a finalist in the Breaking News (Medium) category for its coverage of the city’s flooding crisis in 2013. The Herald and the Edmonton Journal received a joint-nomination for the University of Florida Award in Investigative Data Journalism for the papers’ Fatal Care series, which chronicled tragic foster care deaths in the province.
The annual awards feature nominees from a range of nonprofit, public, academic institutions and major media outlets from around the world. The winners for the 2014 awards will be announced at the 2014 ONA Conference and Online Journalism Awards Banquet on Saturday, September 27 in Chicago.
