Canada Post strategic review seeks input

The Canadian Community Newspapers Association would like to remind its members that they have until September 2, 2008 to provide feedback for the Government of Canada’s strategic review of Canada Post.

In response to continued concerns about the activities of Canada Post, the Government of Canada announced a strategic review of Canada Post on April 21. Following the announcement, CCNA staff met with the advisory panel and while they are supportive of the industry, this is an ideal opportunity for members to make their views known on issues surrounding flyers, delivery delays, and rising costs.

“We are preparing a submission on behalf of the association which will call for an independent regulatory body to arbitrate disputes with Canada Post,” said CCNA and Canadian Newspaper Association Chief Executive Officer John Hinds.

“We would also ask the advisory panel to look at specific delivery rules for smaller rural communities particularly when the processing is done on-site. In addition, we are also asking that postal pricing be in line with actual costs and be timely, transparent and predictable and to ensure that flyers are recognised as part of a newspaper.”

Members are urged to provide detailed information about specific circumstances.

The review will be guided by four principles, including public policy obligations, financial performance, and that Canada Post will remain a Crown corporation.

The advisory panel’s final report will be submitted in December, 2008.
