Bob Cox, publisher of the Winnipeg Free Press and chair of the Canadian Newspaper Association, addressed a House of Commons committee on Tuesday, May 31, alongside Newspapers Canada CEO John Hinds.
Presenting on behalf of Newspapers Canada members, Cox and Hinds appeared before the standing committee on Canadian Heritage to advocate for increased government support for the publishing industry and address outdated government legislation. The association representatives also outlined a series of recommendations for MPs to consider, which included increasing federal ad spending in newspapers, tax incentives to encourage investment in Canadian news media, and revising copyright laws to protect original work.
The presentation is being made available to members, and newspapers are encouraged to republish the text as an op-ed piece.
