Alan Shackleton, the managing editor of The Scarborough Mirror, the East York Mirror and the Beach-Riverdale Mirror, is retiring from the newspaper business. Shackleton has served as managing editor at the Ontario newspaper since January 2002.
He began his journalism career as an intern at the Pickering News Advertiser in 1985. He has been with Metroland for the past 27 years working in various newsrooms in Markham and Toronto.
Shackleton received second place in the Editor of the Year category at the 2015 OCNA Better Newspapers Competition. Judges noted, “In a career that has spanned close to 30 years, Al Shackleton has embodied what it means to be a newspaper editor at the grassroots level. There is a quiet competence to his work, which is evident not only in the awards he has won for his newspaper, but in his involvement with numerous community activities.”
