The Member Spotlight is a Newspapers Canada initiative to showcase unique, creative, and innovative ideas among members. We hope that this initiative will give members a broader scope of the industry by allowing them to see what other publications are working on, foster creativity, and offer a platform on which to display the product of their own hard work.
We invite you to send us the ideas and initiatives you’re excited about, as well as the fun and interesting things you’re developing, and allow us to share them with other members.

Our first feature is a Remembrance Day special section from the Gull Lake Advance in Saskatchewan, published on November 9, 2015. Entitled “Lest We Forget,” this feature won first place in the 2016 Great Idea Awards Special Section Category (Circulation 4000-24999). The judge praised it as “a powerful, well-designed section that offers a fresh take on a familiar theme.”
Overall, the section is a respectful and beautiful tribute to Canada’s veterans and fallen soldiers.
“Lest We Forget” contains 20 pages of local content, both new and archived, as well as several Remembrance Day themed advertisements. The elegant design includes a subtle, yet striking use of the colour red, echoing that of the Remembrance Day poppy. The layout composition is balanced, tasteful, and refrains from looking crowded despite the copious amount of content. The archived images and documents are hauntingly beautiful, and add a layer of authenticity to the piece as a whole.
The Gull Lake Advance went above and beyond to commemorate Saskatchewan’s war dead by naming each and every one along the bottom of the pages in the section.
The Gull Lake Advance should be proud of their hard work and dedication on this piece.
