MAY 29, 2011 – As previously reported, the Canadian Union of Postal Workers (CUPW) will be in a legal strike position on Thursday, June 2, at 11:59 PM EDT.
Publishers are strongly advised to contact their local postal outlets before making alternative delivery arrangements. While some rural postal outlets have indicated that they will be closed during the strike, others have indicated they will remain open and that local mail will be delivered.
Newspapers Canada has yet to receive a definitive answer from Canada Post on this issue despite repeated requests. We will continue to pursue the matter with Ottawa and will provide members with updates as we receive information.
There have been conflicting reports on the impact of a strike on rural Canada. In a press release issued May 31, Canada Post indicated that a postal strike would affect residents and
businesses across the country.
Canada Post and the CUPW have been negotiating a new collective agreement for the Urban Postal Operations Unit for seven months. Both sides have indicated that negotiations will continue until the strike deadline.
Should a strike occur, Canada Post has indicated that no mail or parcels will be delivered, but that government pension and social assistance cheques will still be delivered.
