Michael Cobden, a long-time journalist and educator, who was a staunch apartheid opponent in his native South Africa, died from leukemia on Dec. 24. He was 77.
He worked at the Toronto Star from 1968 to 1975, the Kingston Whig-Standard (1979-1988) and King’s College in Halifax (1988-2005), where he directed the school’s journalism program.
Awards for journalism students and faculty at King’s — beer bottles, spray-painted in gold — were named after him: the Golden Cobden.
He is survived by his wife Jane, and his three children, Daisy, Joe and Josh.
