Local Journalism Initiative

In some parts of Canada, residents do not have access to journalism about community issues and institutions through local newspapers, community radio, television or other news media. These gaps in coverage mean that citizens do not have necessary information about news, issues and events that affect them and their day-to-day lives.

The Local Journalism Initiative aims to change that.

News Media Canada welcomes renewal of the Local Journalism Initiative

News Media Canada is awaiting information from the Department of Canadian Heritage on how the new program will be deployed. Read the Government of Canada announcement here and News Media Canada’s response here. Subscribe to our LJI Newsletter here.

The Local Journalism Initiative supports the creation of original civic journalism that is relevant to the diverse needs of underserved communities across Canada, broadening availability and consumption of local and regional news on matters of civic governance.

Launched by the Government of Canada in 2019, the Local Journalism Initiative provides news organizations with funding to hire reporters to cover underserved communities.

The Local Journalism Initiative is administered by seven independent non-governmental organizations, representing different segments of the news media industry. To apply, contact the Administrator Organization that serves your particular segment of the industry.
