Local Journalism Initiative
In some parts of Canada, residents do not have access to journalistic information about community issues and institutions through local newspapers, community radio, television or other news media. These gaps in coverage mean that citizens do not have necessary information about news, issues and events that affect them and their day-to-day lives.
The Local Journalism Initiative aims to change that.

News Organizations

The Local Journalism Initiative offers funding for written press, community radio, community television, online news services and news agencies to hire reporters to cover underserved communities.

Eligible news organizations will be responsible for defining the need for an LJI reporter. This may include areas where there is a specific public interest to be served or public body requiring coverage. These areas include courts, municipal councils, legislatures, school boards, port authorities, transportation boards, or hospitals, for example.

Areas that also may be considered for LJI funding include undercovered issues of national scope.

Not sure if your news organization is eligible for the Local Journalism Initiative?
