Media giant Quebecor has announced its decision to pull out of the province’s voluntary regulatory body. In a letter to the council Quebecor CEO Pierre-Karl Péladeau claimed the decision to withdraw was based on dissatisfaction with recent rulings involving its newspapers.
Péladeau also cited a lack of vision and a desire to limit freedom of the press on the part of the council. The Quebec Press Council, led by well-known retired Justice John Gomery, is an independent non-profit organization that lobbies for freedom of the press and the public right to information.
