The Globe and Mail has appointed Sylvia Stead as the paper’s first public editor. Stead, who will report directly to editor-in-chief John Stackhouse, has worked at the Globe since 1975 in numerous senior editorial roles, serving most recently as associate editor.
“The creation of this position is a major step for the Globe to make us more transparent and accountable to our readers, and to continue to build our most important asset — credibility — in the Canadian market,” said Stackhouse in a memo to the newspaper’s staff and executives.
Stead will take over the newly created position on January 23.
