CRTC update on Unsolicited Telecommunication Rules

The Canadian Radio-television and Telecommunications Commission (CRTC) recently investigated a number of consumer complaints against the newspaper industry in connection with unsolicited contact by telemarketers. While our industry is exempt from some aspects of the Unsolicited Telecommunication Rules, newspapers must adhere to certain National Do Not Call List requirements when soliciting newspaper sales. The CRTC has issued a monitoring letter to Newspapers Canada in order to remind our newspaper members of the various rules surrounding telemarketers and clients of telemarketers.
