Managing editor’s departure leads to numerous staff changes at The Globe

David Walmsley is leaving his position as managing editor at The Globe and Mail to become the new director of news content for CBC News. Walmsley is an award-winning journalist who has worked at The Globe and Mail since 2006. Before joining the national daily paper, Walmsley held the role of managing editor of CBC News Ottawa and before that, executive producer of newsgathering for CBC News.

According to a press release from CBC, Walmsley will be responsible for driving foreign and domestic newsgathering for all programs and platforms.

Replacing Walmsley as managing editor at The Globe and Mail will be Report on Business editor Elena Cherney. Before joining the paper in 2007, Cherney held positions at The Montreal Gazette, the National Post and The Wall Street Journal.

Derek DeCloet will replace Cherney as the new Report on Business editor. DeCloet has served as managing editor of ROB since 2009.

A new position of editor of news and sport has also been created for Sinclair Stewart, who has been national editor for The Globe since 2009.
