The health of the daily newspaper industry continues to improve according to year-end linage and revenue data released by the Canadian Newspaper Association. Total revenues came in at $3,140,713,000, climbing in all four quarters for a year-end gain of 3.7% over 2009. Online revenues continued to increase, rising by 15% over the same time last year, up substantially from last year’s gain of 2.3%. Print ad revenues rose 3.5%, and circulation revenues gained 1.4%.
All regions registered increases in the National ROP (Run of Press) category, with the Atlantic Provinces and Ontario leading the growth with increases of 12.5% and 11% respectively. Overall, ROP in the national category rose by 9.5% and in 2010 accounted for 22% of ROP, up from 20% in 2009. Retail, which accounted for 48% of all ROP linage last year, dropped by just over 1%, with some regions – Ontario, Quebec and the Prairie provinces – posting gains. Classified ROP dipped by 6.2%.
