FP Newspapers reports first quarter profit increase

FP Newspapers Inc., which owns the Winnipeg Free Press, the Brandon Sun and a number of Manitoba regional and community newspapers, is reporting a 26 percent increase in profit this quarter. The newspaper group’s net earnings grew by $600,000 over the three month period thanks to a $1.7 million reduction in operating costs.

Cost-cutting savings were the result of a combination of lower newsprint and employee compensation costs, and a 16.6 percent decline in "other" expenses.
