Award-winning sportswriter Ian MacDonald dies at 87

Ian MacDonald,a longtime sportswriter and editor at The Montreal Gazette, died last week at age 87. MacDonald began his journalism career at The Herald in 1948. He joined the newsroom at the Montreal Star in 1955 and later moved to the Montreal Gazette in 1970.

He was with the Gazette for almost 29 years and was best known for his coverage of the Montreal Expos baseball team. In 1977 he received a National Newspaper Award for sportwriting for a series about the growing American influence in the CFL.

He retired in 1998 but continued to contribute to the Gazette on a freelance basis.
