Supreme Court maintains limits on class-based defamation claims

The Supreme Court of Canada has ruled on a class action case involving former radio host André Arthur.

The Quebec Superior Court awarded damages to a non-profit organization representing Montreal taxi drivers after Arthur made offensive comments on air about "Arab and Haitian" drivers. Following an appeal, during which the Canadian Newspaper Association acted as an intervener on behalf of the defendant Diffusion Metromedia CMR Inc., the SCC overturned the case.
