News organizations must demonstrate that their work has achieved identifiable results in order to be considered for the award.

The Michener Foundation also invites Canadian journalists to apply for its Michener-Deacon fellowship programs. The Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Investigative Journalism and the Michener-Deacon Fellowship for Journalism Education provide financial awards to support journalistic pursuits that serve the public interest.
